Appel was also strongly influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and the use of rich primary colors and broad brushstrokes of mid-twentieth-century Expressionist painters. Though CoBrA disbanded in 1951, its influence on Appel and the mainstream of modern art continued to be of great importance. Appel also created sculpted works using all kinds of used materials (in the technique of assemblage), painting them in bright colors. Included in this exhibition are several prints from the FIA's collection as well as a selection of wall sculptures from the Kresge Art Museum.
