Crossroads Village pictureStep back to the late 1800s and experience life as it was enjoyed more than 100 years ago at Crossroads Village and the Huckelberry Railroad where the past is ever present.

Crossroads Village, with its 35 historic structures, captures a simpler time. Friendly villagers, in period dress, welcome you to their homes, mills and shops. Visit the blacksmith busy at his forge and the printer publishing the latest news. Perplexed by an illness? The doctor's office is dispensing herbal remedies. Visit the early mills, where the power of water turns grain into flour, saws logs into lumber and presses apples into cool, sweet cider.

"All Aboard!" The magnificent Huckleberry Railroad is waiting for you to board one of its 15 historic coaches for a nostalgic 8-mile, 45-minute ride. The Baldwin steam locomotive provides the power to carry more than 400 passengers on its narrow gauge track. So, for a true turn-of-the-century railroad experience, climb aboard the Huckleberry Railroad for fun and excitement for the whole family!

The beautiful Genesee Belle, a paddle wheel riverboat, offers scenic cruises on the unspoiled Mott Lake. The Genesee Belle has an open-air upper deck for unobstructed sightseeing and the lower deck is climate-controlled in the summer and fall. Lunch and dinner cruises are available on selected dates. For more information on lunch and dinner cruises call the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission at (810) 736-7100 or 800-648-PARK (7275).

Enjoy a lively stage show in the original second-floor Colwell Opera House and for a one-of-a-kind experience, be sure to ride the 1910 Parker Superior Wheel and the beautiful 1912 Parker Carousel. Crossroads Village is the only place in the world that you can experience two C.W. Parker vintage amusement rides. The 1930 boat-shaped Venetian Swings and the miniature train ride and mechanical pony carts are sure to delight the children.

Crossroads Village is open late May through Labor Day weekend. The Village is open Wednesday through Sunday, and holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Crossroads Village is CLOSED ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS, except during holidays (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day). The group strove for direct expression unguided by intellect, with an emphasis on surrealistic motifs. Appel was also strongly influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and the use of rich primary colors and broad brushstrokes of mid-twentieth-century Expressionist painters. Though CoBrA disbanded in 1951, its influence on Appel and the mainstream of modern art continued to be of great importance. Appel also created sculpted works using all kinds of used materials (in the technique of assemblage), painting them in bright colors. Included in this exhibition are several prints from the FIA's collection as well as a selection of wall sculptures from the Kresge Art Museum.

Abstract Expressionism: Then and Now

This exibition surseys the American art movement Abstract Expressionism from its origins in the postwar period to the latest developments in the late twentieth century. Artists as diverse as William de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner created works in the mid-twentieth century that were characterized by powerfully expressive techinques. Artists from subsequent generations. like Larry Poons and Jules Olitski continued experimentation with texture and color to maximize the medium's emotional and expressive potential. Third-wave Abstract Expressionist painters, including Roy Lerner, Stanley Boxer and Joseph Drapell, built on the earlier movement, using paints that they invented through working with Golden Paints, developing new techniques and forms of expression.

TYRONE HILLS
HISTORY

Tyrone Hills started its life as a single family farm located on Old U.S. 23, one half mile west of the Tyrone Township Hall and a few miles southwest of the Fenton Downtown Commercial Center. Residents lovingly referred to that part of town as Dibbleville, relating back to the original Village's name before the founding fathers changed the name of the town and street names.

During Fenton's hay days, it was a thriving lumber town with many lumber Barons living in their mansions along the cities broad new streets. Fenton lumber suppliers shipped lumber out of state to help build cities like Chicago and Indianapolis until the forests were exhausted.  Althuogh, Fenton remains a major commercial center for the smaller villages that surround it.

W. Bruce Matthews III, created Tyrone Hills Golf Club in late 1963. It was originally planned as a 27 hole golf course, which Bruce used the rolling hills, ponds and trees to create this beautiful public golf course.

Historical Whaley House Museum

[RETURN TO ATTRACTIONS MENU]

The Historical Whaley House Museum represents a fascinating era when Flint began to make the transition from a small lumbering community to one of the world's largest automotive industrial centers.Dating back to 1859, Whaley House first belonged to the Austin B. Witherbee family. The next owner, James Briscoe, a lumberman, purchased the property and added the third floor. On July 21, 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Whaley bought the house and made major improvements. Robert Whaley came to Michigan from Castile Township, New York. He married Mary McFarlan in 1867. Mary's father, Alex, was a prominent Flint lumberman and Robert joined his father-in-law's business. As the pine trees were depleted, Alex McFarlan entered the banking and real estate fields. In 1876, he was elected President of a recently established Flint bank. By 1877 Robert Whaley became a bank Director and four years later succeeded his father-in-law as President of Citizens Commercial and Savings Bank. Robert remained as president until his death in 1922. He is credited with making a crucial start-up loan to Billy Durant who founded General Motors. After Mary's death in 1925, Whaley House was transformed into the McFarlan Home, a residence for elderly ladies. In 1974, the McFarlan Home constructed a more modern facility next door. In 1976, seven organizations acquired Whaley House, saving it from demolition, and formed the Whaley Historical House Association that operates the house today. The Whaley House Museum offers personal guided tours to individuals, families and small groups. Guided tours are available, by appointment only, when purchasing certain "Overnight Pure FunPaks!". Personal guided tours are scheduled Monday through Friday, on the hour, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Public guided house tours are also available and are held every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. No scheduled appointment is needed during public guided house tours. The Whaley House Museum is closed for all tours on Sundays and major holidays. The Whaley House is available to rent for small weddings, candlelight, catered dinners for romantic evenings (such as Valentines Day), parties and business meetings. Many social events are hosted each year at Whaley.

The Whaley Historical House is a featured stop on the Flint Corridor of Michigan's
