"Something Waits Beneath It - Early Work by Andrew Wyeth, 1939 - 1969"
(Included in Package Price)
May 7 - August 7, 2011
Ford Graphics Gallery

This intimate exhibition of more than 30 early and seldom seen works by the young Andrew Wyeth includes watercolors of coastal Maine and eastern Pennsylvania made from 1939 through the 1960s. Eleven illustrated letters, with 18 watercolor and ink sketches, reveal the private observations of the artist such as glimpses of napping dogs, a bowl of holly, or a nearby stream. It is these very objects, animate and inanimate, that often disappear from finished paintings that provide the mystery infusing so much of Wyeth’s art.
This group of early works is replete with the artist’s imagery of weathered architecture, subtleties of landscape and light and unexpected viewpoints. Ranging from casually glimpsed to deeply studied, Wyeth’s scenes are born of close observation, memory, and mastery of line and color, interwoven with his personal experience and feelings.

The exhibition will include around fifty works of art and will be accompanied by a full color catalogue with an essay by guest curator, Dr. Valerie Ann Leeds, which will examine Lewandowski’s work, and explore the critical reception of his work as well as his relationship to other Precisionist artists.

"Treasures of Mexican Colonial Painting"
(Included in Package Price)
September 3 - November 6, 2011
Hodge & Temporary Exhibition Galleries

The Catholic Church pervaded all aspects of cultural life in Mexico and much of the art that evolved was religious in content and visual language. These works frequently were used in the religious rites and ceremonies of the liturgy or for private devotion.
Authoritarian yet flexible, the Spanish colonial system incorporated indigenous government systems, traditions and beliefs into the social fabric of Mexico, producing a culture that was recognizably Hispanic but not slavishly Iberian. An abundance of natural resources filled the coffers of the state and supported a thriving visual arts community.
Treasures of Mexican Colonial Painting has been selected from the permanent collection of the Figge Art Museum, which holds one of the most important collections of Mexican Colonial painting in the world.

[RETURN TO ATTRACTIONS MENU]
The Historical Whaley House Museum represents
a fascinating era when Flint began to make the transition from
a small lumbering community to one of the world's largest automotive
industrial centers. Dating
back to 1859, Whaley House first belonged to the Austin B. Witherbee
family. The next owner, James Briscoe, a lumberman, purchased
the property and added the third floor. On July 21, 1884, Mr.
and Mrs. Robert J. Whaley bought the house and made major improvements. Robert Whaley came to Michigan
from Castile Township, New York. He married Mary McFarlan in 1867.
Mary's father, Alex, was a prominent Flint lumberman and Robert
joined his father-in-law's business. As the pine trees were depleted,
Alex McFarlan entered the banking and real estate fields. In 1876,
he was elected President of a recently established Flint bank.
By 1877 Robert Whaley became a bank Director and four years later
succeeded his father-in-law as President of Citizens Commercial
and Savings Bank. Robert remained as president until his death
in 1922. He is credited with making a crucial start-up loan to
Billy Durant who founded General Motors. After Mary's death in 1925, Whaley
House was transformed into the McFarlan Home, a residence for
elderly ladies. In 1974, the McFarlan Home
constructed a more modern facility next door. In 1976, seven organizations
acquired Whaley House, saving it from demolition, and formed the
Whaley Historical House Association that operates the
house today. The Whaley House Museum offers
personal guided tours to individuals, families and small groups.
Guided tours are available, by appointment only, when purchasing
certain "Overnight Pure FunPaks!". Personal guided tours
are scheduled Monday through Friday, on the hour, between 10:00
a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Public guided house tours are also available and
are held every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. No scheduled
appointment is needed during public guided house tours. The Whaley House Museum is closed for all tours
on Sundays and major holidays. The Whaley House is available to
rent for small weddings, candlelight, catered dinners for romantic
evenings (such as Valentines Day), parties and business meetings.
Many social events are hosted each year at Whaley.
The Whaley Historical House is a featured stop
on the Flint Corridor of Michigan's
Automotive National Heritage Area.

During the holidays, experience a Christmas from
the 1800's,
when the Whaley House Museum opens its
home to all for a
"Victorian Christmas."
Get the chance to meet a Victorian St. Nicholas.
Not only view holiday decorations used from
the past, but
also catch a glimpse of other Victorian artifacts on display,
in life-like settings,
from Flint's historical past. All this, and more, while listening
to the
festive sounds of holiday music and enjoying complimentary cookies
and cider.
