EXCITING EXHIBITS OF THE ARTS!

"Gee's Bend Quilts and Beyond"
(Included in Package Price)
January 23 - April 18, 2010
Hodge & Temporary Exhibition Galleries

Gee's Bend
Founded in the early 1800s by the Gee family as a cotton plantation, Gee's Bend, Alabama, is isolated from much of the nearby countryside since it is surrounded on three sides by the Alabama River. After the Civil War, the formerly enslaved people of Gee's Bend remained on the land as tenant farmers. Generations of Gee's Bend residents had minimal interaction with absentee landlords and outlying communities. Therefore, the citizens of Gee's Bend developed a distinctive local culture - with quilting taking a vital place in their lives. The strikingly innovative, abstract quilts were often the only colorful or decorative furnishing in otherwise plain living spaces.

Gee's Bend Quilts and Beyond highlights one of Gee's Bend's most original artist, Mary Lee Bendolph, and also explores the work of Bendolph's mother, Aolar Mosely, her daughter, Essie B. Pettway and her daughter-in-law, Louisiana P. Bendolph.

"Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism: Paintings from the Brooklyn Museum"
(Included in Package Price)
February 6 - April 18, 2010
Contemporary & Dow Galleries

Landscapes

This exhibition includes many of the finest examples of mid-nineteenth through early twentieth-century French and American landscapes from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The 38 paintings presented offer a broad survey of landscape painting as practiced by such leading French artists as Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet and their most significant American followers including Frederick Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent.

The exhibition also includes many American painters who, beginning at mid-century, followed in the footsteps of the French archetypes seeking to improve their skills and find inspiration in Paris and its environs, attending French art academies and frequenting the painting locations made famous by their Barbizon and Impressionist predecessors. Some of the Americans had direct contact with leading French landscape painters, sharing landscape sites or seeking informal guidance from admired mentors. The majority of the American paintings on display depict American locales: beaches, factories, tenements and notable subjects such as Central Park in works distinguished by brilliant colors and lively, broken brushwork.

Whaley House Museum

[RETURN TO ATTRACTIONS MENU]

The Whaley House Museum represents a fascinating era when Flint began to make the transition from a small lumbering community to one of the world's largest automotive industrial centers.Dating back to 1859, Whaley House first belonged to the Austin B. Witherbee family. The next owner, James Briscoe, a lumberman, purchased the property and added the third floor. On July 21, 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Whaley bought the house and made major improvements. Robert Whaley came to Michigan from Castile Township, New York. He married Mary McFarlan in 1867. Mary's father, Alex, was a prominent Flint lumberman and Robert joined his father-in-law's business. As the pine trees were depleted, Alex McFarlan entered the banking and real estate fields. In 1876, he was elected President of a recently established Flint bank. By 1877 Robert Whaley became a bank Director and four years later succeeded his father-in-law as President of Citizens Commercial and Savings Bank. Robert remained as president until his death in 1922. He is credited with making a crucial start-up loan to Billy Durant who founded General Motors. After Mary's death in 1925, Whaley House was transformed into the McFarlan Home, a residence for elderly ladies. In 1974, the McFarlan Home constructed a more modern facility next door. In 1976, seven organizations acquired Whaley House, saving it from demolition, and formed the Whaley Historical House Association that operates the house today. The Whaley House Museum offers personal guided tours to individuals, families and small groups.
